The business stopped after a fire: does building cover pay for lost sales?

After a fire, the building repair bill is only part of the problem. Expenses may continue while the business cannot operate. Describe the interruption and ask the proposal to identify the relevant financial cover rather than assuming it follows the building sum insured.

THE ESSENTIALS

Before you start

  • Premises damage and interruption need separate questions.
  • Projected sales are not a calculated insurance payment.
  • Read the protection period alongside the loss-assessment method.

Find the cover before calculating

Fidelidade Multirriscos 2's public presentation lists business interruption, loss of profit, reopening costs and indirect losses as separate options. It states that covers vary by business. This example does not establish that every commercial policy automatically pays all such expenses.

Ask for the exact contracted cover and the clause defining its trigger. A commercial list does not replace the applicable terms.

Map the route back to operation

Our preparation exercise separates inspection, repairs, equipment arrival, stock replacement and restart. For each stage, record what prevents operation and who can estimate the time. Building work might finish before the business is ready.

Use the timeline to ask when the cover's assessment period begins and ends and whether a waiting period applies. Do not choose a duration simply because it matches the builder's estimate.

Projected sales are not an insurance calculation

Fictional example: a shop expected 5,000 euros in sales during ten days of closure. That number describes expected sales; alone, it proves neither lost profit nor the insurer's payment.

Prepare continuing costs, avoided costs and separately identified additional expenses. Ask which measure and documents the clause uses. Avoid counting one expense under two headings or treating a forecast as established loss.

Keep a separate recovery record

Our suggested filing method separates repair invoices, temporary reinstatement expenses and interruption information. Record each cost's date and reason. Finance staff can help explain the figures without confusing turnover and profit.

For an actual fire, follow the claim instructions and seek clarification before committing to extraordinary expenses where possible. This exercise does not approve an estimate or replace claims assessment.

Bring a focused question to RMACHADO

Describe the activity, recovery time and costs that concern you. For a quote or review, ask: 'Which cover addresses this interruption and how is the loss assessed?' The answer depends on the proposal and terms actually contracted.
