THE ESSENTIALS
Before you start
- Separate building repair from claim preparation.
- Itemise tasks, purpose and estimate amounts.
- Locate the benefit, exclusions and particular conditions.
Start with the purpose of the service
As a reading method, separate technical work needed to reinstate the building from work intended to present or dispute a compensation request. One invoice can include both. The provider being an engineer or architect does not by itself classify every service.
Nuno asks for the tasks and deliverables to be identified separately. Clara helps distinguish repair design, technical supervision and a report supporting the claim without deciding which work is necessary or payable. Safety and building-work decisions belong to competent professionals.
A contractual example has a specific exclusion
Generali Multirrisco Empresas 541.031 (October 2024) Specialist Fees distinguishes services indispensable to reinstating the building after a covered loss from services preparing claims or loss estimates for the insurer, which it excludes. This is not a rule for every policy.
Check whether the benefit was actually purchased and request the clause with the particular conditions. The example neither recommends the product nor confirms a café claim. A commercial summary or a benefit heading in a PDF establishes neither selection nor acceptance of an expense.

Separate the questions even within one estimate
Nuno makes a sheet identifying each proposed service, purpose, building, separate price and supporting record. He marks completed work separately from a proposal. This is an editorial method to make the request clear, not a universal list of mandatory evidence.
He asks the insurer which benefit it is considering, how each item is treated and which procedure to follow before assuming reimbursement. If some work concerns an improvement chosen by the business, he identifies it separately. An estimate issued after damage is not necessarily entirely reinstatement expense.
The reply should identify the service assessed
Keep the response and check that it concerns the same proposal, tasks and amounts. A general statement that fees appear in the policy does not answer the exclusion being discussed. If classification is disputed, ask for the contractual basis and use the appropriate support process; do not change the description of work to seek another answer.
For existing damage, use policy support. To prepare future protection for the business, select Business Property under Request a quote on RMACHADO. A quotation request neither accepts previous expenses nor authorises building work. Clara leaves Nuno four points to organise the conversation.
