Child in a bicycle seat: does the adult's insurance include them?

Rui Lobo prepares the bicycle to take one of his children on a ride, then looks at the seat and hesitates: does the insurance name only the adult? In this fictional story, Clara Mota starts with the definition of an insured person. Naming Rui or the bicycle in the documents does not replace confirmation about the child being carried.

THE ESSENTIALS

Before you start

  • Check whether the child is an insured person.
  • Separate injuries to the child from damage to others.
  • Describe the actual use in the proposal.

Why the question matters

Crédito Agrícola’s public CA Ciclista FAQ states that children carried in a seat are covered if they are insured persons under the policy. This concerns that product, not every bicycle policy or Rui’s own contract. The FAQ does not replace reading the terms applicable to the policy.

Ask your own insurer: «Under this contract, is the child being carried named or included as an insured person, and for which benefits?».

Describe your planned journeys

Prepare a note explaining who rides, who is carried, the bicycle type and intended use. A family outing, regular journey and race are different descriptions; do not reduce them all to «cycling».

In the fictional story, Rui already has protection for his own accidents and starts planning rides with one of his children in the seat. Clara asks him to describe the new use and seek confirmation about the passenger. Reporting the change does not by itself prove that a change in cover has been completed.

Ask two separate damage questions

Separate «What if the child is injured?» from «What if we cause harm to someone else?». For each answer, ask which cover applies, who is included and what limit is relevant.

If the answer is simply «family insurance», request the corresponding policy definition. The marketing description alone leaves your original question unresolved.

Keep the confirmation

Keep the dated request and reply with any updated documents. For an initial quote, describe the situation without posting a child's name, address or documents on social media.

This article concerns insurance questions. The seat installation and transport must also comply with applicable rules and instructions. You can request a quote from RMACHADO describing your intended use.

KEEP THESE QUESTIONS

Your checklist for the next conversation

  • Describe the rider and child passenger.
  • Check insured status, injury cover and limits.
  • Ask separately about liability.
  • Keep the confirmation and any policy changes.
