THE ESSENTIALS
Before you start
- Separate your own stock from goods received from another entity.
- The total sum insured and the third-party goods sublimit are different questions.
- Do not infer the owner’s insurance arrangements from an informal statement.
Counting does not erase ownership
Nuno had recorded only total stock. Clara suggests two columns: his own property and third-party property. She adds who delivered it, the reason it is held and the reference of its delivery document. Customer names and commercial details stay in the private file.
Consignment, deposit and purchase should not be treated as synonyms in the request. Describe the arrangement with the supplier and identify what remains unclear. The list does not resolve ownership disputes or replace the documents governing that relationship.
A contractual example links the sum insured to a sublimit
MAPFRE Business Multi-risk, code 34820200900 defines third-party goods to include deposit or consignment stock on the premises. Special Condition 32 covers direct damage from events insured elsewhere in the policy and requires evidence of the goods. Third-party merchandise values join the merchandise/raw-materials sum insured, subject to its specific sublimit.
This is a contractual example, not universal cover or a product recommendation. For your proposal, ask which goods are considered, the total sum insured and the specific limit. Adding a value to a list does not establish that cover was purchased or that this amount would be paid after a loss.

Keep an inventory that can reconstruct arrivals and departures
Fictional example: Nuno holds ten boxes of his own and four belonging to the supplier. When he sells a consignment box, he needs to update that column without losing the delivery reference. Clara suggests keeping the count date and linking arrival, sale and any return. These numbers are not recommended sums insured.
As an editorial preparation method, create a line for each owner and group of goods, including quantity, location, expected holding period and the basis for the value stated. Separate an estimated maximum from an actual count. Flag values still to be established instead of inventing them.
Ask about other policies and the cause of damage
Condition 32 excludes professional liability and goods unrelated to the activity at the location, among other situations. Where owners or depositors took out policies covering the same damage before this cover was purchased, it operates in excess of those policies. The originating peril’s terms still apply.
Ask the supplier to clarify its insurance arrangements for these goods at your premises. Keep the references and send them for assessment through the indicated channel. Do not add policy limits as if they produced two payments or turn an inventory discrepancy into a covered event.
Prepare the request for the stock the café receives
At the first discussion, Nuno can explain that he wants an assessment of supplier-owned stock held at his premises. Clara helps him organise the groups and questions without stating that his existing policy already includes them. Details follow through the appropriate channel.
To request a future assessment from RMACHADO, select Multirriscos Empresarial under Request a quote or Please contact me. If damage has already occurred, use policy support and preserve available records. A new quote request does not change the insurance in force when the event occurred.
