THE ESSENTIALS
Before you start
- This guide concerns dangerous or potentially dangerous dogs.
- Check which insurance evidence the parish council requires.
- Track licence validity and the insurance period separately.
Insurance is one part of the document set
Article 5 of Decree-Law 315/2009 includes insurance evidence among the licensing documents. Article 6-A sets a maximum licence validity of one year; Article 10 establishes liability insurance for the keepers concerned.
Confirm the current list with the parish council for the keeper's residence and the requirements applicable to the animal. This article does not classify a dog or extend this duty to every companion animal.
Check the evidence against the application
Establish whether the document can be linked to the keeper and animal in the licensing process and whether you can identify the insurer, contract reference and relevant period. Ask the issuer to correct errors or explain anything unclear.
Do not treat a quotation, amendment request or message saying an application was sent for assessment as evidence of a completed insurance contract. Ask for the appropriate evidence and confirm with the licence issuer that it is the required document.
Keep two dates in a simple example
Fictional example: Ana finds one date on the licence and another in the policy. Rather than assuming both renew together, she records each separately and checks which documents will need to be presented. She does not change dates or reuse an old file as evidence of a current period.
Set reminders ahead of each date and retain the current document version. Keep the file in an appropriate place, avoiding publication of animal identifiers, addresses and personal documents in groups or comments.
Arrange protection before relying on evidence
In a pet-liability quote enquiry accurately describe the known classification and keeping arrangements. Do not choose a category simply to obtain a price. If classification is uncertain, first seek clarification from the competent authority.
RMACHADO can help organise the insurance enquiry and document questions. A quote does not issue a licence, replace required identification, vaccination or training, or confirm insurance acceptance. Existing incidents need the process for the applicable policy.
