Practical guide · Reading insurance investment risk

Risk 2 on a scale from 1 to 7: can I only lose 2%?

Marta Sequeira writes down «2 out of 7» while reading a document and asks whether that limits losses to 2%. Clara Mota asks her to separate categories from percentages. In this fictional story, the number is only a reading example: it does not classify a proposal for Marta or establish whether an investment suits her.

THE ESSENTIALS

Before you start

  • A risk category is not a percentage loss.
  • The number must match the actual product and option.
  • Read the warnings and assumed holding period.

A category scale is not a euro calculation

The annex to CMVM Regulation 8/2018 identifies the summary risk indicator with a number from 1 to 7. A «2» is a classification, rather than a 2% charge, a 2% return or a 2% maximum loss.

Clara adds three separate fields to Marta’s notes: category, assumed holding period and accompanying warning. She does not multiply the category by the sum Marta might invest, because the category number does not supply that calculation.

Read the sentence beside the number

A Fidelidade KID dated 27 January 2026 shows category 2 for five years and one day and warns about changed risk on early exit. It is a specific example.

Record the warning and when you may need the money. Ask for that situation to be explained separately from the displayed category.

Do not infer a guarantee from the class

The example addresses capital protection, early exit and the manufacturer’s inability to pay separately. Locate those references rather than inferring a guarantee from the number.

Marta wants to keep a reserve available for household expenses. Clara helps identify that need before the proposal is assessed, without choosing a product or ordering another investment’s surrender. Having assets available and needing cash soon are different questions.

Compare documents for the same option

Record the product, option, document date, class, horizon and warnings. Keep an older version as history if a new one arrives and ask what changed. A different number needs explanation; it does not by itself show that the product now suits you.

KEEP THESE QUESTIONS

Your checklist for the next conversation

  • Check the product, option and document date.
  • Distinguish risk categories from percentages.
  • Read the horizon, warnings and protection terms separately.
  • Request an explanation for when you may need the money.
