THE ESSENTIALS
Before you start
- The organiser of a public sporting event has its own sports-insurance duties.
- The participant’s registration and legal category need checking.
- Personal cover, liability and bicycle damage serve different purposes.
The event policy has an identified responsible party
Article 15 of Decree-Law 10/2009 requires organisers of sporting events open to the public to arrange temporary sports insurance for participants not covered by the insurance regimes identified there. Participants join when registering.
A registration form saying “insurance included” is insufficient detail. Ask the organiser to identify the relevant contract, the participants and activity considered, dates and the claim contact. Checking this information does not transfer the organiser’s statutory duty to the participant.
Existing insurance does not establish an automatic exemption
The law distinguishes sporting agents, including registered federation athletes, from other participants. Article 8 permits exemption from joining a federation’s group policy when an insurer’s certificate proves cover equal to or above the required minimum. This is not a general exemption for anyone presenting a leisure policy.
If Inês already has insurance, she provides the relevant reference through the indicated channel and asks the organiser to clarify her registration category. She does not independently deselect a mandatory option merely to reduce the entry cost.
Which minimums are published for 2026?
IPDJ’s information for 2026 lists€33,197.57 for death and absolute permanent disability and €5,311.61 for treatment and repatriation expenses. Partial permanent disability is weighted by the degree of incapacity. These are official references for that year, not invented example amounts.
Minimum cover amounts are updated annually. For the actual comparison, check the complete table for the event year, contracted amounts and applicable deductibles. The treatment limit does not promise payment of every invoice up to that amount.

A broken bicycle is a separate question
The statutory core of sports insurance concerns personal accidents. Its existence alone establishes neither cover to repair a bicycle or pay for its theft nor liability cover for damage caused to other participants. Those needs require their corresponding provisions to be read.
Inês makes three lines: her own injuries, damage she might cause to others and damage to equipment. Clara helps connect each line to a document without recommending a brand. For a student, an unexpected repair can strain the budget even when personal cover exists.
What to do
1. Identify the event, dates and your participation category, including any federation registration.
2. Ask the organiser for the insurance information applicable to your entry and the incident contact.
3. Compare the table for the event year and any deductibles; submit certificates through the indicated process without assuming exemption.
4. Read injuries, liability and bicycle damage separately. For future protection, request a quotation describing the actual activity; a request does not confirm event cover.
