Practical guide · Accidents and occupation

You cannot return to your occupation: does Personal Accident disability cover answer the same question?

A permanent impairment and inability to perform an occupation are not automatically equivalent descriptions under insurance. When protecting work is the objective, 'permanent disability' needs a more precise reading than the capital shown on the proposal.

THE ESSENTIALS

Before you start

  • General permanent-disability cover does not establish a specific occupation benefit.
  • Check the definition, declared occupation and that benefit's capital.
  • Temporary sick leave and permanent inability require different checks.

Find the benefit's own line

Allianz Acidentes Pessoais pre-contractual information 155, dated November 2023, lists base permanent disability separately from an optional permanent total disability benefit for the usual occupation. This illustrates why the occupational question may require a distinct benefit.

It does not confirm that the option exists under your policy or establish a universal definition. Ask for the benefit actually purchased and the condition explaining when it can operate.

Describe the work you want to protect

Prepare a short description of the occupation and usual tasks: manual or administrative work, travel, equipment use or other relevant functions. The purpose is to clarify the declared risk rather than assign yourself a disability percentage.

Fictional example: two proposals mention permanent disability and show equal capital. One identifies an assessment table; the other also lists an occupational benefit. Before comparing prices, establish the question each answers and its requirements.

Compare definitions and amounts separately

Ask how functional assessment, limitations in occupational tasks and the policy definition of total or permanent inability differ. Clarify additional requirements and how the relevant occupation is documented.

Then locate the specific capital, limits, exclusions and interaction between benefits where several exist. Do not add amounts from separate pages without confirmation of the calculation. Recognition of a benefit by another organisation is not, by itself, this insurer's decision.

Do not infer a permanent conclusion from sick leave

Recovery can raise separate questions about temporary incapacity, treatment or rehabilitation. Locate those benefits under their own conditions rather than assuming a medical certificate already satisfies permanent-disability requirements.

Take questions about each benefit's purpose and the activity to declare to RMACHADO when comparing Personal Accident cover. Clinical information in an actual claim should follow the insurer's designated channel. This article assesses neither fitness for work nor a claim payment.

KEEP THESE QUESTIONS

Your checklist for the next conversation

  • Identify any purchased occupation-specific benefit.
  • Check the declared occupation and tasks.
  • Read contractual total and permanent definitions.
  • Separate occupational capital from other benefits.
  • Distinguish temporary leave from permanent assessment.
