The building is not on the shop policy: must its glass be excluded?

Henrique Vasconcelos prepares insurance for rented business premises and assumes that excluding the building also excludes all its glass. In this fictional story, Clara Mota asks him to check the breakage benefit before reaching that conclusion. Protecting one component does not insure the entire structure.

THE ESSENTIALS

Before you start

  • Omitting the building does not alone settle the glass question.
  • A glass extension may exclude fittings and supports.
  • Confirm the clause actually contracted.

Read the extension as well as the property category

MAPFRE 34820200900 CE 21 can include glass of the identified premises even where the building is uninsured, then restricting protection to the glass and excluding fittings and supports. Its own limits and exclusions apply. This is a contractual illustration, neither a recommendation nor confirmation of your policy.

Henrique separates glass from structure

Clara suggests describing each component rather than writing only shopfront. Henrique separates the pane, frames, fittings and remaining frontage elements. That list supports an enquiry about the clause’s scope without presenting the whole assembly as one protected item.

For a comparison, identify the location, component and use. If a quotation for work already exists, ask for itemised costs; if not, record that it is missing. Itemisation helps analyse the enquiry but does not establish an obligation to pay each item.

The circumstances of breakage still matter

Do not conclude from the material’s name alone. Describe what happened or, for a proposal, the situation you want clarified: normal use, work on the premises or moving property. Ask which exclusions matter instead of turning a commercial reference to breakage into an answer for every event.

After damage, first take appropriate measures to protect people and report through the policy channel. Retain photographs and available documents without delaying necessary urgent measures. A claim assessment needs the facts; this guide decides neither the cause nor cover for an individual breakage.

Confirm the scope without compounding assumptions

Henrique can ask what protection applies to the premises glass and which components need separate assessment. Clara recommends keeping the response with the proposal version. Do not assume the landlord’s contract pays the same expenses or that an extension on the shop policy fully replaces it.

For a new assessment, select Business Multi-risk in Request a quotation and identify this need. For an existing breakage, use policy support. A quotation neither adds retrospective protection nor confirms payment.

KEEP THESE QUESTIONS

Your checklist for the next conversation

  • Identify the glass and its premises.
  • Separate the pane, fittings, frames and supports.
  • Check the contracted extension, limits and exclusions.
  • Use the appropriate enquiry channel without assuming landlord cover.
