Sustainable insurance investment: does ESG mean EU Taxonomy alignment?

Marta Sequeira finds a savings proposal with green imagery and references to ESG. Clara Mota asks for information about the specific option. In this fictional story, Marta wants to understand how sustainability relates to risk, costs and access to her money; the insurer’s image does not answer those questions.

THE ESSENTIALS

Before you start

  • An insurer’s ESG policy and a product’s characteristics are different information.
  • Sustainability characteristics do not automatically mean Taxonomy alignment.
  • Assess sustainability and financial terms together.

Separate three statements

ASF distinguishes ESG factors, product sustainability characteristics and activities aligned with the EU Taxonomy. Having sustainability characteristics does not imply that alignment. An insurer’s ESG policy also does not establish that all its products make sustainable investments.

Request information for the actual option

Request pre-contractual information for the proposed option. ASF explains that it should identify whether, and to what extent, the product invests in Taxonomy-aligned activities. General corporate material does not answer the question about that option.

Editorial method: create four rows for the marketing statement, the document explaining it, the option concerned and the outstanding question. Record document dates. If the proposal changes option, check these again rather than carrying over your earlier conclusion.

Turn a preference into a checkable question

Fictional example: Marta wants to prioritise emissions reduction. Clara helps her ask where that feature is described, which part of the option it concerns and which document supports it. Another household may have a different priority; no one needs to invent a preference to complete the request.

This example gives no environmental rating to a real product. If an indicator or percentage is unclear, ask what it covers and which document it comes from. Do not guess answers in a sustainability-preference assessment merely to proceed.

Keep risk and costs in the comparison

The joint EBA, EIOPA and ESMA factsheet warns against relying on names such as green or sustainable alone. These products retain financial risks and do not necessarily offer better terms. It recommends comparing product information with both financial and sustainability objectives.

Keep a separate area in your notes for the time horizon, losses you can bear, costs and exit conditions. This editorial reading aid does not replace any applicable suitability assessment or guarantee capital or returns.

Before deciding

Request explanations you can put into your own words and keep them with the proposal version. Missing information should remain marked as outstanding. An incomplete explanation is not confirmation that a product meets your preferences.

KEEP THESE QUESTIONS

Your checklist for the next conversation

  • Identify the product, option and document versions.
  • Distinguish the insurer’s ESG policy from product features.
  • Request information on any EU Taxonomy alignment.
  • Compare personal preferences with risk, costs, term and exit conditions.
