Used bicycle: do the invoice and price paid settle the insurance value?

You have found a second-hand bicycle and received the invoice kept by its first owner. Before comparing premiums alone, clarify how the insurance identifies today's buyer, values the bicycle and treats its acquisition date. Buying the bicycle and obtaining acceptance of an insurance proposal are different steps.

THE ESSENTIALS

Before you start

  • The price paid, market value and insured limit may differ.
  • An invoice in the previous owner's name needs advance clarification.
  • Acquisition date may have a separate role in the conditions.

The example separates value from acquisition evidence

In Generali Tranquilidade Bicycle and Scooter conditions 507.041, May 2025, assistance defines market value by age, condition and other characteristics, capped by the sum insured. The VIP theft/robbery provision refers to an invoice in the policyholder's or relative's name. This is neither universal nor proof that any used bicycle is accepted.

Do not fill documentary gaps with assumptions

Fictional example: a bicycle is advertised for EUR700 with an older EUR1,200 invoice in another person's name. Those two figures do not determine a future indemnity. The old invoice may help identify the equipment, but the buyer-identification requirement still needs clarification.

Gather the documents that actually exist and describe the transaction. Ask how they can be assessed, without changing names or dates or assuming an informal declaration replaces a required document. Obtain a response before treating the issue as resolved.

The acquisition date can raise a separate question

The same policy example provides a three-month theft/robbery waiting period when acquisition predates the three months preceding policy purchase. For a resale, clarify which acquisition and date evidence the product uses; do not choose whichever date removes the waiting period.

Prepare a short chronology showing any known previous acquisition, today's purchase and the intended insurance start. Mark unknown dates as unknown. This makes the question concrete without automatically concluding that a waiting period applies or does not apply.

Compare the proposal with the bicycle you will buy

Ask the proposal to identify the equipment and valuation basis assessed. Check the intended use too, and retain identifying photographs through the appropriate channel; do not publish serial numbers or personal documents in groups.

Choose Bicycles when preparing a quotation enquiry with RMACHADO. Resolving the documents does not establish that every disappearance is covered: the event, custody and remaining conditions still require their own examination.

KEEP THESE QUESTIONS

Your checklist for the next conversation

  • Gather bicycle identification and the acquisition documents available.
  • Separate purchase price, valuation basis and limit.
  • Clarify the required invoice identity and the relevant acquisition date.
  • Keep the response and conditions before relying on protection.
