Explained exercise · Equipment sums insured

The leasing debt has fallen: should the machine's insured sum fall too?

Nuno Patrício sees the debt on his café equipment fall and asks whether the insured sum should fall too. In this fictional story, Clara Mota separates the finance statement from the valuation required by the policy. Outstanding payments and the cost of replacing the asset may evolve differently.

THE ESSENTIALS

Before you start

  • Debt and equipment value measure different things.
  • Find the applicable contractual valuation basis.
  • An insured sum is not a guaranteed payment.

The contract example uses its own basis

Fidelidade Bens em Leasing CG045, September 2026, uses new replacement value to set the sum in clause 13. Its definitions distinguish replacement and current value. This contract example does not equate either with the debt.

Keep three numbers separate

In a fictional exercise, Nuno gathers a €12,000 balance, the original €30,000 invoice and a €34,000 estimate for equivalent equipment. Clara marks each number’s date and function: outstanding financing, past purchase and replacement reference. These are not three claim offers.

Use the exercise to ask which basis the policy requires and which costs enter the valuation. Do not automatically select the smallest number to reduce premiums or the largest as a precaution. Obtain a technically justified estimate matching the contractual definition.

Separate the sum from a potential claim calculation

Clause 25 of the same example uses current value less salvage when repairs exceed that basis. Clause 26 permits payment terms enabling debt release for the indemnified portion. Neither reference turns the finance balance into the guaranteed claim amount.

As a reading exercise, if a loss has already occurred, Nuno prepares two separate questions: the insurer is asked for its explained loss calculation; the lessor for the balance, reference date and contractual procedure. Clara neither adds the insured sum to the payment nor concludes that the lease has ended. Each answer is kept with the corresponding document.

Review using dated documents

For a leased-assets insurance quote with RMACHADO, identify the equipment, year, characteristics and available valuation reference. Confirm lessor requirements and equipment changes too. Detailed financial data should use the indicated channel; an initial discussion can start with the concepts and missing documents.

The equipment matters to the café’s income. Even so, reducing the sum simply to lower the premium can leave the valuation basis unresolved. A review should explain the actual need and terms considered without promising that a payment replaces all revenue or expenses.
