Explained exercise · Excess per asset and event

Two leased assets in one claim: are their excesses added together?

An incident damages two financed items in a small office. The policy list gives each item an excess, raising a question: must the business bear both? The answer requires the contract's treatment of multiple assets in one insured event. A list of figures alone cannot settle the calculation.

THE ESSENTIALS

Before you start

  • Read the per-asset excess alongside the same-event rule.
  • Some contracts apply only the highest excess in that scenario.
  • The exercise neither fixes compensation nor removes other limits.

The Fidelidade example

Clause 24 of Leased Assets CG045, September 2026, provides that where excesses are set per insured asset and one event damages several such assets, the insured bears only the highest applicable excess. This is that contract's rule, to check against the particular conditions, rather than an assumption for every quotation.

Establish the assumptions before calculating

Fictional exercise: under that same-event rule, the applicable excesses for two items would be EUR150 and EUR300. The reference would be EUR300 rather than their EUR450 sum. This compares excesses only, without establishing accepted damage, available limits or final compensation.

Separate events, uncertainty about a single claim or percentage-based excesses require those assumptions to be clarified first. Nearby dates do not, by themselves, establish one insured event.

Ask each quotation the same question

For each quotation, record whether the excess is per asset, benefit or event and whether it is a fixed amount or formula. Then locate the rule for several damaged items and obtain a written reference. Do not compare summed excesses in one quotation with a single figure in another without understanding the reason.

Also identify the assets and benefits to which the figures apply. Do not reduce insured sums simply to obtain a certain excess or assume a lower excess makes the whole policy better. Keep the equipment and comparison scenario consistent.

Prepare the enquiry with separate asset information

For a Bens em Leasing quotation, tell RMACHADO about the equipment, use and lessor's requirements. Detailed information can follow through the indicated channel, without financial contracts or serial numbers on social media. An existing event belongs with the current policy's notification procedure, without deciding the excess in advance.

KEEP THESE QUESTIONS

Your checklist for the next conversation

  • Locate each asset's excess.
  • Read the rule for several assets in one event.
  • Distinguish fixed amounts from percentages.
  • Compare the same scenario in each quotation.
  • Separate the exercise from final compensation.
